As most people are away from their computers for the next few days, I knew that many of you were counting on me to bring you your weekly dose of “Useless Friday Info”.

It seems that many of you really go off the deep end if I fail to deliver in a timely manner so here is this weeks edition:

“Sol+stice derives from a combination of Latin words meaning “sun” + “to stand still”.  As the days lengthen, the sun rises higher and higher until it seems to stand still in the sky.”

“Bacon will not curl up when dipped in boiling water before you fry it.”

“Robot comes from the Czech word ‘robota’ which means ‘forced work or labor’.”

“60% of all US potato products originate in the state of Idaho.”

“Ancient Pagans celebrated mid-summer with bonfires.  When couples would leap through the flames it was their belief that their crops would grow as high as the couples were able to jump.”

“Electricity travels at the speed of light-more than 186,000 miles per second.”

“Thomas Edison did not invent the first light bulb-he did invent one that stayed lit for more than a few seconds.”

“Monarch butterflies journey from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico, a distance of about 2000 miles, and the return to the north again in the spring.”

“Bruce Lee was so fast that they had to slow down the film so the you could actually see his moves.”
