This week I was flipping through the television channels when I ran across a story about Michael Phelps.
Just in case you don’t remember who that is, he is the guy that won a record eight gold medals at this years Summer Olympics in Beijing.

As I listened to the story I heard something that I really couldn’t believe. Someone had taken a picture of Michael smoking marijuana. Now to a lot of people that doesn’t seem like such a big deal, but for some reason it was something I thought Michael would never be a part of.
Here’s the deal. I was guilty of putting this guy on a pedestal. In my mind I had pictured him as the all American success story. He wasn’t someone who I thought would do something like this, especially since he had so much to lose.
I was disappointed.
But then I remembered. I remembered how many times I’ve told people that at some point I will let them down. Even as a Pastor or a friend, I will let you down.
We’re all guilty of placing people on a pedestal. That’s what I did with Michael Phelps.
But just like Michael disappointed me, eventually I will disappoint you.
