Have you ever had some statement or words come out of your mouth and instantly you said to yourself, “Where did that come from?”
I think it’s happened to all of us at some point in our life. We were just rolling right along and something comes from deep within that even catches little old me totally off guard. You’re like, “What did I just say?”
Jesus is talking with some religious leaders and all of the sudden he just throws out this amazing thought:
“Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body, but things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man unclean.” Matthew 15:17-18
Jesus is making this comparison that the mouth is like a gauge to what is going on deep within the heart. He’s saying if you want to know what’s going on with someone just listen to their mouth.
Have you ever found yourself in this situation? Let me be the first to admit that I have. I have had things come out of my mouth that totally surprised me. And as I began to look deep within there were some things that I needed to deal with. There were some issues going on in my heart that were totally taking me to places I really didn’t want to go.
